Pay monthly 

You currently have the option of purchasing your boiler on finance via British Gas. 

The standard specifications of British Gas’s financial plan include: 

• No required deposit
• Three-year loan term 
• 0% annual percentage rate (APR)

This option allows you to pay for your boiler and installation in manageable monthly instalments, instead of a once-off, high upfront payment. 

For example, instead of paying £3,413 upfront for a Worcester Bosch Greenstar 4000 24kW system boiler replacement, you can instead pay just £98.62 a month, over three years. 

Pay in full  

If you have the funds available, you can also pay for your boiler upgrade in full. For this option, a 10% deposit is required to secure your boiler purchase. Once the installation is complete, you’ll need to pay the outstanding balance. 

For example, if you purchase a Vaillant ecoFIT pure 830 combi boiler, you’ll need to pay a deposit of £311.80 upfront. Once the installation is complete and you are happy, the balance of £2,806.20 will need to be paid. 

Online quote discount

For a simple like-for-like boiler replacement, you can request a quick online quote estimate for your boiler. This will save you an at-home assessment cost of £450. 

However, the online quote system is limited. To get this discount, the following is required: 

• Optimal flue placement
• Like-for-like boiler replacement (same location, type of boiler and fuel source)
• No back boiler replacements
• An electric or mains gas-powered boiler replacement (not LPG or oil)

British Gas offers various levels of boiler cover under its HomeCare packages.

While British Gas is one of the biggest names in boiler installation, they are not a Which? approved Trusted Trader, like Heatable. 

In fact, in 2022, Heatable was the first online boiler installation company to receive this award for its quality installations and services. 

Heatable also offers a wider range of boiler options during their online quotation process compared to British Gas, giving customers more flexibility to choose a boiler that best suits their needs.

Like BOXT, Heatable’s online quotation process is a lot easier to use. They also provide online quotes for jobs deemed more complicated and that require a home assessment by British Gas. 

For example, you can get an online quote for switching from a gas conventional boiler to a gas combi boiler on Heatable, whereas this type of installation can only be quoted once an installer has assessed your home through British Gas. 

Should You Choose British Gas?

If you want the peace of mind that comes with partnering with a well-known, established name in the industry, then British Gas is a good option. It’s also ideal if you prefer an installer to conduct an at-home assessment of your boiler needs, rather than online-only options. 

The company has made some progress in closing the gap between its costs and those of its competitors, as the difference used to be thousands of pounds rather than a couple hundred. 

However, it is a premium installer with big overheads and a huge cost base to cover, so it’s unlikely it will charge less than some of its competitors, like Heatable and BOXT. 

If you value a streamlined online quote process and are more budget-savvy, Heatable or BOXT may be a better option. These competitors also offer many of the same benefits as British Gas, like financial plans, boiler servicing and boiler cover.
