Who is British Gas?
British Gas has a history that dates back to 1812. Since being privatised in 1997, it has grown to become the largest gas supplier in the UK and second-largest electricity supplier, after being overtaken by Octopus Energy at the beginning of 2024.
Apart from energy supply, British Gas also provides boiler installation, financial plans and insurance cover.
It has become a household name in the boiler industry, with 6,500 Gas Safe registered engineers who worked on 1.8 million boiler repairs in 2023.
It also boasts a Trustpilot score of 4.1 out of 5.
To determine if British Gas really is a top performer in the boiler industry, we have conducted extensive market research to help you decide if they are the right installer for you. We will look at the costs of their boilers, how you can save money on your installation, and how the company compares to its competitors in the market.
British Gas New Boiler Cost
On average, you can expect to pay around £2,500 to £5,000 for a new boiler from British Gas, including installation.
However, the final cost will depend on several factors, including:
- Boiler size
- Type
- Model
- Brand
- Property size
- Property location
- Installation complexity
- Type of house (detached, semi-detached, etc.)
- Number of radiators
What is included in the quoted cost?
British Gas is quite transparent with its pricing structure and does include some additional services in its quoted boiler price:
- Installation by a professional heating or Gas Safe registered engineer
- A full system flush and treatment
- Any additional electrical work required (completed by a professional electrician)
- A minimum 5-year warranty
- Removal and recycling of your old boiler
- Minor building repairs work
- A new flue
- A filling loop and mini pressure expansion vessel (for combi boilers)
- Condensate internal connections
- Programmable thermostat
- £450 discount (for an online quote)
While a programmable thermostat is included in the price, you can opt for a smart thermostat at an additional cost. You have the option of either a Hive Thermostat or a Hive Mini Thermostat, which can add £44 to £99 to the total cost.
British Gas Conventional Boiler Costs
In 2024, you can expect to pay between £2,600 and £3,200 for a like-for-like conventional gas boiler replacement from British Gas.
To get a better idea of what you can expect to pay, we’ve included a quoted estimate based on the below specifications:
- Online quote

- Semi-detached house
- 11-15 radiators
- 1 shower

British Back Boiler To Combi Boiler Costs
In 2024, we estimate that British Gas currently charges around £4,000 to remove a back boiler and replace it with a gas combi boiler.
However, the company does not currently provide an online quote estimate for this type of removal and installation. Since this job is a lot more complex than a like-for-like boiler replacement, an at-home boiler quote appointment is required.
This is also a good indication that the overall costs will likely be higher than a standard replacement.
What Are The Latest British Gas Boiler Installation Costs?
British Gas includes the installation costs of their boilers in your final, quoted amount. So, you won’t need to worry about this extra cost.
However, we can estimate that the company includes a cost of around £900 to £3,500 in the quote for the installation and labour required.
The installation cost included in your quote will depend on the complexity of the job. Here are some scenarios where you can expect a higher installation cost:
- Switching to a boiler that uses a different fuel source (e.g. changing from a gas combi boiler to an electric model).
- Changing the location of your boiler (e.g. from the loft to a kitchen cabinet).
- Back boiler removal and replacement with a combi, conventional or system boiler.
- Switching to a different type of boiler (e.g. from a conventional boiler to a combi boiler).
- If the flue is located over a permanent structure, such as a garage or house extension.
- If the flue is less than 60 cm from the nearest door or 30 cm from the nearest window.
Any of these scenarios would require extra work and parts from the installer and will, therefore, add to the installation costs.
Here’s a look at estimated costs that could be added to your quote:
- New flue: £150 to £750
- System flush (included in all quotes): £500
- Relocating a boiler: £200 to £1,500
- Changing from a conventional or system boiler to a combi: £1,000 to £2,000
- Call-out home assessment fee: £450
Which Boilers Do British Gas Install?

Latest British Gas Boiler Deals
British Gas currently offers numerous financial plans, deals and discounts that make installing a new boiler more accessible and manageable. These include 0% ARP financial plans, discounts for online quotes and insurance cover for your boiler that can see you save on annual serving costs.
Pay monthly
You can now choose to finance your boiler purchase through British Gas. Check out our guide to gain a better understanding of how boilers on finance work.
The standard specifications of British Gas’s financial plan include:
- No required deposit
- Three-year loan term
- 0% annual percentage rate (APR)
This option allows you to pay for your boiler and installation in manageable monthly instalments, instead of a once-off, high upfront payment.
For example, instead of paying £3,413 upfront for a Worcester Bosch Greenstar 4000 24kW system boiler replacement, you can instead pay just £98.62 a month, over three years. Check out our guide on Worcester Bosch boiler prices to find a model suited to your needs.
Pay in full
If you have the funds available, you can also pay for your boiler upgrade in full. For this option, a 10% deposit is required to secure your boiler purchase. Once the installation is complete, you’ll need to pay the outstanding balance.
For example, if you purchase a Vaillant ecoFIT pure 830 combi boiler, you’ll need to pay a deposit of £311.80 upfront. Once the installation is complete and you are happy, the balance of £2,806.20 will need to be paid. If you’re considering other models, be sure to check out our detailed article on Vaillant boiler prices to explore a range of options and find the perfect fit for your home.
Online quote discount
For a simple like-for-like boiler replacement, you can request a quick online quote estimate for your boiler. This will save you an at-home assessment cost of £450.
However, the online quote system is limited. To get this discount, the following is required:
- Optimal flue placement
- Like-for-like boiler replacement (same location, type of boiler and fuel source)
- No back boiler replacements
- An electric or mains gas-powered boiler replacement (not LPG or oil)
If you require a new boiler that doesn’t fit under these specifications, you will need to book an appointment with a British Gas installer for a home assessment.
HomeCare cover
British Gas offers various levels of boiler cover under its HomeCare packages.
All the cover options include the cost of an annual boiler service, which usually costs £99 from British Gas.
Here’s a breakdown of what each level of cover includes:
HomeCare package | Cost per month | Excess | Annual boiler service | Boiler and control repairs | Central heating repairs | Plumbing repairs | Unblocking and repairing drains and waste pipes | Electrical repairs |
Basic | £19 | £60 | ✔ | ✔ | ||||
Essential | £21 | £60 | ✔ | ✔ | ✔ | |||
Classic | £25 | £60 | ✔ | ✔ | ✔ | ✔ | ✔ | |
Complete | £27 | £60 | ✔ | ✔ | ✔ | ✔ | ✔ | ✔ |
If covering the upfront costs of boiler repairs or servicing is a concern, taking out boiler cover could be a smart option. For more details on one such option, check out our OVO boiler cover review to see if it’s the right fit for you.
British Gas Boiler Installation Reviews
British Gas currently boasts a rating of 4.1 out of 5 stars on Trustpilot, with over 201,460 reviews. However, the majority of reviews are based on the company’s other services, such as energy supply.
Out of these reviews, only 36,736 are based on its boiler installations. To get a better idea of how British Gas fairs in terms of these specific services, we analysed 100 recent reviews in 2024. Here’s what we found:
Trustpilot Rating (out of 5) | Percentage of customers |
1 star | 15% |
2 stars | 3% |
3 stars | 3% |
4 stars | 5% |
5 stars | 74% |
While the company does receive a few 1 stars, mainly relating to its aftercare services, most customers are happy with the service and installations they received from British Gas.
Let’s look at an overview of what some customers had to say about their experiences:
- “5 and a bit year old boiler installed and serviced by British Gas started leaking. Promised an Engineer over the weekend, no one turned up. You need to be honest with people so that they can make their own arrangements rather than promising things you cannot deliver!” – MK, June 8 2024 (1/5 stars)
- “Just had a new boiler installed by a british gas engineer who arrived on time, was very friendly, professional, and explained everything that he was doing. Everything was completed to a high standard and everywhere was left very tidy. Overall experience was excellent.” – Alison, June 3 2024 (5/5 stars)
- “Had new boiler fitted. All on time. The engineer worked well. Explained everything and cleaned after himself and put furniture back. All worked like clockwork 1st boiler got delivered 2nd engineer arrived and second day completed the job and in the afternoon the old boiler and rubbish got collected. Super job!” – Gyl Redington, June 3 2024 (5/5 stars)
British Gas Vs Their Competitors
To help you decide whether British Gas is the right boiler installer for you, we’ve compared their services and costs to those offered by two of its competitors: HomeServe and BOXT, and Heatable.
British Gas vs HomeServe and BOXT
HomeServe and BOXT offer very similar services to British Gas, including boiler installation, cover, servicing and finance plans. They also work with the same boiler brands as British Gas.
However, BOXT’s prices are significantly lower. They are mostly an online-only model, meaning they are very lean and can pass those cost savings onto customers, as seen by their keen pricing structure.
To give you a better idea of the pricing difference, let’s take a look at this snapshot regarding the installation of a Worcester Bosch Greenstar 18Ri conventional gas boiler:
Boiler installer | Cost (including installation & thermostat) | Cost on finance (0% APR) | Warranty | Savings with BOXT |
BOXT | £2,725 | £113.54 (24 months) or £89.60 (36 months, 11.9% APR) | 10 years | £322.33 |
British Gas | £3,047.33 | £85.81 (36 months) | 5-year minimum |
BOXT only offers 0% APR on loans for two years and 11.9% interest thereafter for a three-, five- or 10-year term. However, the full upfront cost is less than that of British Gas.
The flexibility to adjust your deposit amount (0% to 50%) and loan term are other added bonuses, allowing customers to tailor their payments to their budget.
Additionally, BOXTs online quotation process is a lot more streamlined and user-friendly than British Gas’s.
British Gas vs Heatable
While British Gas is one of the biggest names in boiler installation, they are not a Which? approved Trusted Trader, like Heatable.
In fact, in 2022, Heatable was the first online boiler installation company to receive this award for its quality installations and services.
Heatable also offers a wider range of boiler options during their online quotation process compared to British Gas, giving customers more flexibility to choose a boiler that best suits their needs.
In terms of costs, Heatable’s services are slightly cheaper. To put this into perspective, we’ve compiled a cost comparison for installing a Worcester Bosch Greenstar Ri 18 kW conventional gas boiler.
Boiler installer | Cost (including installation) | Cost on finance (0% APR) | Warranty | Savings with Heatable |
Heatable | £2,805 | £65.14 (36 months) | 10 years | £242.33 |
British Gas | £3,047.33 | £85.81 (36 months) | 5-year minimum |
Based on this comparison, Heatable’s initial prices may seem cheaper. However, there are a few points you need to keep in mind:
- The company doesn’t include the cost of a thermostat in their prices, so this will need to be purchased separately. Depending on the type of thermostat you go for, this can increase the overall costs in line with those from British Gas.
- Whether you opt for a full up-front payment or boiler payment plans, you’ll need to pay a 10% deposit of the total cost. For a British Gas installation, you only need to pay a 10% deposit if pay in full.
- With Heatable, you also have the option to “buy now, pay later”, over 12 months.
Like BOXT, Heatable’s online quotation process is a lot easier to use. They also provide online quotes for jobs deemed more complicated and that require a home assessment by British Gas.
For example, you can get an online quote for switching from a gas conventional boiler to a gas combi boiler on Heatable, whereas this type of installation can only be quoted once an installer has assessed your home through British Gas.
Should You Choose British Gas?
If you want the peace of mind that comes with partnering with a well-known, established name in the industry, then British Gas is a good option. It’s also ideal if you prefer an installer to conduct an at-home assessment of your boiler needs, rather than online-only options.
The company has made some progress in closing the gap between its costs and those of its competitors, as the difference used to be thousands of pounds rather than a couple hundred.
However, it is a premium installer with big overheads and a huge cost base to cover, so it’s unlikely it will charge less than some of its competitors, like Heatable and BOXT. For more information on how much does a new boiler cost, be sure to check out our comprehensive guide.
If you value a streamlined online quote process and are more budget-savvy, Heatable or BOXT may be a better option. These competitors also offer many of the same benefits as British Gas, like financial plans, boiler servicing and boiler cover. Check out our guide on BOXT boiler prices and reviews if you’re considering them as an option.
